Business Background

Generally speaking,  I've made a career out of solving hard and interesting problems.

These problems include general, technical and business management:

as well as technical software challenges in many domains:

Management Background

As a serial entrepreneur, I've seen the startup world from every side.  As a business leader, I've hired and managed operations, finance, engineering, marketing and sales.  I focus on building strong, effective teams out of exceptional people who believe that teamwork and cooperation lead to success.   I believe that the best products and companies are still built the "old-fashioned" way: make a commitment to quality, plan well, work hard, maintain integrity, and treat people (partners, employees, and customers) right.

These principles apply across the board to sales teams, marketing teams, engineering teams, and executive teams.

Technical Background

In recent years, I've found great fulfillment in building teams and businesses. Still, I spend significant time keeping up with current technology trends. I find that I can help bridge the gap between business and technology by virtue of having a deep understanding of both.

Technically, I like to understand how things work from the inside.  That's how I got deep into operating systems; I really wanted to know how it all worked. After some years of coding device drivers and related stuff, we (Vireo Software) decided to make it easier for the rest of the world, and built some highly acclaimed toolkits for developing device drivers and operating system extensions (VtoolsD, DriverWorks, DriverAgent).

More recently, I helped build Lumigent Technologies - a company focused on database work.  There, we built tools for data recovery, and security and privacy auditing.

I stopped counting the number of programming languages I've used over the years, but some of the more interesting and obscure ones include IBM 1401 assembler (a cool machine - no fixed word size!), SNOBOL (just dabbled with it), IITRAN (Illinois Institute of Technology Fortran variant - my very first language back in 1968) and dozens more, most recently web development languages such as AJAX-style development in C# and Javascript.
